go on a hike and just follow your instincts, but this is mostly for older people (15+) and make sure to bring a map and a compass

Fun camping for the first timer is with a small group of close friends.
If you have little experiance, keep it simple and fun. Although I don't enjoy car camping myself, for an introduction into camping, find a state park that you can drive into. There often are primitive camp sites at these facilities within a mile or so of the pull in camp sites. Maybe on the first night camp at the pull in site, then the next night hike to the primitive site and see how it goes.
Plan on day hikes, fishing....whatever the park has to offer.
Picnics, trees, campfires.....it's fun just being outside with friends in nature.

here is a place to look for national parks.
    www.nps.gov

If you do a google for state parks and include your state, it will be able to get you in touch with a list of state facilities and lists of what each park has to offer. Some are better for solitude, some better for families, some fishing, some hiking.....etc.

cooking outside is one of the best parts of camping, especially if you're an inexperienced camper.
i like to plan an extravegant dinner, then spend hours cooking at the campsite. it's challenging and fun, especially when there is a small group involved in the cooking.
i recommend looking for dutch oven recipes (and don't forget dessert!!)

when you actually go, do a 5 mile hike during the day, then start cooking dinner around 3pm. gather tons of wood and have a bonfire and make s'mores into the evening. hopefully it'll be nice and you can stargaze too.

    have fun!!

    Campfire games are fun.
Try two truths and a lie. Each person has to say three things about themselves that may not be known by everyone in the group. Two are true and one is a lie. Then the group has to guess which one is the lie.

Learn some riddles and have the group try to guess by asking only yes or no questions.

Try winter camping and by all means do not do it alone. Take a friend you would like to have keep you warm while you watch the fire burn down and the stars and Northern Lights come out.

You will not be cold as long as you have the right equipment and keep dry. Layers are important as is using things to insulate you from the ground, including using the snow as your insulation. There are campgrounds in ID for instance where you can camp right near open hot springs to use as a hot tub of gigantic proportions.

If planned properly it will be the camping trip you will always remember and be most proud of.
